Auroville, an international township adjoining Pondicherry, has contributed immensely to developing varieties of Contemporary & Eco-conscious crafts garnering recognition from far and wide. Many villagers living close to Auroville, in the early days, got trained at various craft-making units of Auroville involved in making leather crafts, upcycled crafts, glazed ceramic pottery, terracotta, seed-jewellery, lights & lampshade making, embroidery, hand-weaving, Eco wood crafts etc. Many of them have their own micro village crafts units today forming craft clusters in and around Auroville villages like Alankuppam, Sanjeevi Nagar, Kottakarai, Irumbai etc.
