Crafts Council of Puducherry (CCP) is a registered non-governmental organization based in Puducherry (formerly known as Pondicherry) that works relentlessly towards the development of Crafts & Craftspersons across all the regions of Pondicherry and its adjoining craft clusters.

Pondicherry is indeed a multi ethnic land that displays a combination of Tamil heritage and French Colonial influence even in Arts & Crafts.CCP aims to identify and support the development of traditional,contemporary,sustainable crafts & many other crafts related activities of the region.Pondicherry’s contribution to India’s crafts scene has been formally recognised now with two GI tags, one for Villianur Terracotta Works and Thirukannur papier Mache crafts in 2011.Pondicherry has a huge potential in Handicrafts sector most of which still remains untapped. Hence, one of the key objectives of the council is to promote Pondicherry’s crafts on national & international platforms.CCP also conducts regular capacity building programs for Artisans with training in product and design development, up gradation of skills and improved marketing support. Council works to identify, promote,support and market crafts & craftspersons from all regions of the Union Territory of Puducherry namely Puducherry,Mahe,Yanam,Karaikal.

CRAFTS COUNCIL OF INDIA (CCI)

Crafts Council of India (CCI), one of the oldest and most renowned organisations in the field of handicrafts was founded in 1964 by Smt. Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay, freedom fighter,social reformer and heritage enthusiast.It was one of her pioneering efforts toward protecting and enhancing India’s heritage in the nation’s transition to modernity post independence.Regional and local efforts are encouraged, particularly through the network of more than 9 State Crafts Councils.CCI is engaged in partnerships with the Government of India and other activists to ensure a national awareness of the economic, social,cultural and environmental importance of artisans, their crafts and to help address their needs within a rapidly changing environment. CCI is head-quartered in Chennai, Tamilnadu.

Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay
